Skydiggers

Skydiggers

To tell the story of Skydiggers is to tell the story of a thriving musical collaboration that was born in friendship and has abided with trust. Over the course of 15 studio albums and countless miles on the road, Skydiggers have grown from enthusiastic youngsters into husbands, fathers, and mentors. And while band members have changed over the decades, Josh Finlayson and Andy Maize remain its beating heart. With new collaborators bringing their unique musical histories into the circle, the sound of Skydiggers continues to evolve.

Their newest work, Hide Your Light, Bide Your Time (Latent Recordings), was recorded over a three-month span in 2022 at Baker Studios in Saanich, British Columbia. Hide Your Light, the first of the two six song collections was released on June 9, 2023, with the second collection of songs, Bide Your Time, released on October 13, 2023. The two albums were released on a special vinyl edition on November 1, 2023.

The band’s early anthems about the uncertainties of youth are now joined by songs that wear the badges of lives lived and journeys traveled. Skydiggers music shares the stories of our losses, reminds us of our dreams, and paints an optimistic picture of the world the way we wish it could be.

Though some of these new songs veer from the traditional roots of their folk-rock beginnings, the sound and spirit of the music is distinctly Skydiggers – music made by friends, for friends.

PUP

Toronto punk band PUP’s fourth studio record ‘THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND’ was recorded and mixed over the course of five weeks in the summer of 2021, in GRAMMY Award-winning producer Peter Katis ’bat-filled mansion in Connecticut. Full of typically furious, ridiculous and anthemic songs, the recording process allowed PUP to push themselves further than ever before. With more time in the studio, they were able to craft their songs sonically in a way they were unable to in the past, and allowed themselves to incorporate new instruments like piano, synths, horns, and more for the first time. Though made in madness-inducing isolation (aside from Peter and the bats, of course), PUP were remotely joined on the album by Sarah from illuminati hotties, Kathryn from NOBRO, Mel from Casper Skulls, and Erik from Remo Drive. The result is not just the next PUP record, but the *most* PUP record

Ari Shaffir Live in Halifax - SHOW 2

SECOND SHOW OF THE EVENING! Due to overwhelming demand we have added a second show on April 11th with ARI SHAFFIR at 10PM

The Diamond Mine Agency Presents
THE WRONG SIDE OF HISTORY COMEDY TOUR ARI SHAFFIR https://www.facebook.com/arishaffirstandup

Ari Shaffir is an American standup comedian. In addition to his numerous appearances on the Joe Rogan podcast, he is best known for his last special, “Jew,” which has garnered almost 6 million views and was written up in The NY Times in its list of best specials of the year. You might also know Ari from the storytelling show he created and hosted on Comedy Central called “This Is Not Happening.” Ari also has a Netflix special called “Double Negative” and a Comedy Central special called “Paid Regular.” Ari Shaffir has also appeared on WTF with Marc Maron, The Adam Carolla show, Your Mom’s House, 2 Bears 1 Cave, Theo Von’s podcast, Andrew Schulz’s podcast, TigerBelly, and many many more. These appearances have made him a favorite in the comedy podcast world. His own podcast, Ari Shaffir’s Skeptic Tank is a chart topper that comes out every week wherever you watch or listen to podcasts. Ari is the reigning president of the LOS podcast to which he has no affiliation. And he placed first in the non-steroid category of the legendary Sober October challenge, which he also destroyed shortly thereafter so he could found Protect Our Parks with Shane Gillis and Mark Normand which he fooled Joe Rogan into hosting.

The deal is, this is a dirty show. It’s not completely offensive but definitely some parts are offensive. So don’t bring that one friend in your friend group who makes that tsk noise a lot. Just tell them you’re doing something else or your grandmother died or your grandmother killed somebody and you gotta be a character witness. Whatever. Just don’t bring them. But everybody else for sure come. Ari puts on a hilarious show every year of all new material and he brings amazing openers. So it’s just a really funny night of legit mainstream standup and you’re going to have a great time every time

The Link is Light House Arts Centre's arts hub and incubator.

We are excited to present our first official art exhibition, featuring artist Mohammed Aadil.

Join us to meet Mohammed and learn more about his work on February 28th between 5pm-9pm, on the 3rd floor at 1800 Argyle St.

Here are some words from Mohammed, who has curated and co produced this exhibition:

“My name is Mohammed Aadil. I am a third year undergraduate student majoring in Fine Arts- Drawing/Painting, at NSCAD. Through my works, I aim to reflect on my locality, worldly issues and personal background. Primarily, my creative process uses all types of painting mediums and medias. All my life, I lived and grew up in the United Arab Emirates. The Emirati culture has heavily influenced the content and imagery in my artistic oeuvre. I am also an entrepreneur, I run a NSCAD based club called Emerging Expressions. Through which, emerging artists are given a chance to share their artistic voice through exhibitions and podcasts. Currently, I am the VP External for SUNSCAD. I also love writing poetry, through which becomes the main source of inspiration for my artistic oeuvre.

To talk about specific themes and worldly topics, I use symbolic imagery in my works. I really feel that I can reflect on the world around me, through symbolic imagery. World is my debut solo show in my emerging artistic career. Thank you LHAC for giving me this wonderful space to share my creative oeuvre with the Halifax art scene and the world. I am happy to see you all at my opening and I am excited to hear all your wonderful thoughts on my solo show.

Thanks and lots of love,

Aadil

An Evening with Mary Walsh

An Evening with Mary Walsh

Canadian cultural icon, comedienne, and social activist Mary Walsh will perform some of her best comedic bits and most popular characters from Dancing With Rage, CODCO, and This Hour Has 22 Minutes, along with up-to-the-minute local political satire, at the Light House Arts Centre in downtown Halifax on Thursday, Feb. 29 at 8 p.m.

Hailing from St. John’s, NL, Walsh was an original member of the infamous CODCOsketch comedy series, which ran on CBC Television from 1987 to 1992. In 1992, she began to work with Rick Mercer, creating and starring in the highly acclaimed series This Hour Has 22 Minutes, where Walsh's Warrior Princess character Marg Delahunty became famous for ambushing politicians and submitting them to satirical interviews. In 2011, she reprised the role of Marg Delahunty, conducting the now infamous ambush interview of Toronto Mayor Rob Ford at his home. Mary Walsh is the recipient of 25 Gemini Awards, the Order of Canada award, and in 2012 she received a Governor General's Performing Arts Awards for Lifetime Artistic Achievement.

Classic Albums Live performs Supertramp’s Crime of the Century

Founded in 2003 by Craig Martin, Classic Albums Live takes the greatest albums and recreates them live on stage - note for note, cut for cut, using the best musicians. "Think of it as a recital," says Martin. These albums are historic and stand the test of time." Forgoing costumes and impersonations, Classic Albums Live has found success in concentrating solely on the music. "We don't dress up or wear any sort of costume. We just stand there and play. All of our energy is put into the music. We want the performance to sound exactly like the album," says Martin.

With 100+ shows a year across North America, Classic Albums Live has seen massive success in performing arts centres and theatres. Fans in Texas, Las Vegas, Florida, New York and central and eastern Canada have all continued to support the series – making it a sustaining, successful show. "We created something that endures and connects," says Martin. "These albums are sacred to people. We deliver exactly what we promote - 'note for note, cut for cut' accuracy."

It's this type of accountability that works for the series.

Whitehorse

Whitehorse is the prolific partnership of Melissa McClelland and Luke Doucet. Uninhibited by expectation, boldly adventurous and categorically talented, Whitehorse’s signature sound is always guitar-heavy, harmony-plentiful and lyrically deft. With an expansive run of records that freely and thrillingly dip in psychedelic country, pop noir, squalling blues rock and celestial folk, Whitehorse have pushed their musical identity into new realms and sounds for over a decade. As attested by five consecutive JUNO Award nominations in many different genre categories, Whitehorse do a lot of things, and do them well. On their new record, Whitehorse venture deeper into classic country music touchstones than ever before, a move that is both a homecoming and an evolution of their sound. Uncharitable Screening + Social: A Radical New Way of Giving

Presented by NewGround Leadership in partnership with Association of Fundraising Professionals of Nova Scotia

Join NewGround Leadership and our partner, the Association of Fundraising Professionals of Nova Scotia, as we team up to host a screening and catered networking conversation for the film Uncharitable. Step away from your workday and join us for this inspiring event on January 16th at 4:00pm-7:00pm.

“UnCharitable” will change you. It will change everything you’ve ever thought or been taught about charity, giving, solving the great problems of human suffering that have plagued humanity since the beginning of time and building a world that works for everyone, with, as Buckminster Fuller said, “no one and nothing left out.” You will come away with hope you thought was no longer possible.

Join us in a conversation about how nonprofits are unfairly pressured to cut salaries, lower operating costs and delay long term investments, which all degrade organizations’ abilities to accomplish their missions.

Thanks to our Presenting sponsors, Davis Pier, NewGround Financial, Baker Tilley/Harbinger Law & Light House Arts Centre, our tickets are only $10 each and movie snacks will be provided. We believe it is important for everyone to access this important documentary! We also have a virtual viewing option for those outside of Halifax.

After three of the most dynamic and successful U.S. charities were shut down by conservative charity watchdogs, destroying lives and cutting off precious resources, many of the top influencers in the field knew something had to be done to overhaul the nonprofit sector.

Led by Dan Pallotta, whose record-breaking TED Talk on the subject has inspired leading philanthropists and changemakers, this feature-length documentary directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal exposes the dark side of philanthropy and introduces a radical new way of giving. In a powerful call to action, Uncharitable demands that charities be freed from the traditional sackcloth-and-ashes constraints, so that they can truly change the world.

Uncharitable delivers an emotional journey that moves, persuades and inspires its audience to change the way we think about giving.

No topic is more crucial and timely as we confront an increasingly unstable world with the growing revelation that we are all interconnected and that our fate lies in how much we are willing to invest in positive change.

Adam Baldwin & the Jenny Wren

Adam Baldwin & the Jenny Wren

Singer-songwriter Adam Baldwin has been a mainstay of the Atlantic Canada music scene for over a decade. With his sophomore full-length, Concertos & Serenades, Adam Baldwin - born and raised “inside these imaginary lines” that denote Nova Scotia - offers an east coast testimony that challenges the typical tourism marketing gloss. Through eight masterful yarns, the songwriter bears witness and pays tribute to a tradition of desperation: sinners and losers, perpetual failures, and down-and-out phantoms that haunt his home’s coastlines and back roads - without a passing judgement. Some of the tales happened, some didn’t, and most walk a tightrope between truth and fiction.

Starting as a member of rock combo Gloryhound before joining Matt Mays & El Torpedo in 2009, Baldwin’s own music has continued to evolve since his award winning self-titled solo debut EP in 2013. In 2016 Baldwin released his first full length album No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eight-Five) featuring the singles “Daylight” and “Anytime”. In 2019 he released the follow up No Rest for the Wicked, including “Salvation” and “Dark Beside the Dawn”.

In March 2020, with in person performances impossible due to COVID-19, Baldwin launched his Cross-Country Chin Up concert series, almost every Friday evening on YouTube. In addition to making this weekly opportunity to connect virtually with fans, he also raised funds for the Mental Health Foundation of Nova Scotia, Red Cross Stronger Together Nova Scotia Fund, RCMP Fallen Officer Fund, and the Black Cultural Society for Nova Scotia. The online concert series also produced two digital EPs: Chin Up Sessions (originals) and Songs for the Parlour (covers).
